Pyrex cookware is the best for cooking, but it’s also a significant pain to clean. Glass is easy to break and difficult to wash off any residue. The key to keeping your Pyrex looking new and shiny all the time is using these 3 simple steps:
- Scour with baking soda mixed with water until all food particles are gone
- Fill the pot or pan with warm water and dish soap
- Soak for about 30 minutes.
We’ve been cooking for a long time, and we know that nothing is worse than having to scrub off the baked-on food from Pyrex glass pans. It can be so frustrating!
If you are looking to save your fingers, some elbow grease, and some water, this article may be helpful! We’ll share how to clean Pyrex glass cookware with you, which saves a lot of time in the kitchen.
How to clean pyrex glass cookware?
Pyrex pipettes, sometimes called a pipette, are made of a particular type of Glass known as borosilicate. This material is trendy for cooking because it has various applications and can be used safely overheat.
A Pyrex pipette that has been appropriately used should be clean, not cloudy or hazy. However, if the pipette becomes hazy, below are some tips you can follow depending on how dirty your pipette is.
Soaking it in vinegar and water
The quickest and easiest kind of cleanup for Pyrex pieces is to soak them in a solution of water and vinegar. This will eat away any tomato sauce or chocolate on the surface, leaving it looking new.
Vinegar chemically reacts with proteins and removes stains like vanilla or cocoa that can be difficult to clean off.
Another good option for cleaning cookware made out of clear Glass is TSP-PF (tri-sodium phosphate), which can be found at hardware stores near laundry supplies.
This stuff works wonders for removing tough adhesive residue left from stickers on stickers that most other cleaners are not effective against.
Using baking soda and ammonia
We use the following method to clean our Pyrex cookware. First, a coarse paste of baking soda and water is prepared on a dry surface.
Then it’s rubbed into the inside of the Pyrex pot with a cloth or sponge for 3 minutes–the longer you leave it in there, the better off you are.
The next step is to rinse off this baking soda mix and then scrub again with soapy water and rinse again before carefully drying with paper towels.
If any stubborn stains remain, pour white vinegar all over them and let them stand for 15 minutes before wiping them up with canning sponges or using a hot nuke as needed.
Using dish soap and baking soda
Cleaning Pyrex glass cookware: for tough baked-on messes, soak in dishwashing detergent and water, then use baking soda alone or dish soap to remove residue. Rinse well and scrub stubborn spots again if needed. Let air dry.
You can also use a clean cloth dipped in white vinegar to dissolve stubborn stains before using baking soda or dish soap on it.
Baking soda scrubs
Using a soft cloth, rub the baking soda. Rinse thoroughly in clean water and then dry completely. Pyrex is dishwasher safe without added detergent. It is always an easy option as well if you have one available to you.
Wash any remaining food bits off the pot or pan (claiming it’s safe to do this with Pyrex cookware) with either soap and water on a sponge or by putting your hand inside of it while running plenty of hot tap water over its exterior until all debris has come loose from the glass surface.
Now put some baking soda into your palm and scrub onto a stubborn spot like soap would work for you on your dishes during mealtime duty.
Dish soap and long soaking periods
The best way to clean a Pyrex dish is with soap and water. To avoid any coating coming off the bottom of your pot, make sure you use warm soapy water and clean the inside and the outside.
For stubborn stains, boil some water in your dish and let it sit for a few hours before cleaning. For streaks on the glass surface, try leaving it wet for 24 hours or more, then buff with a dry cloth until they disappear.
If all else fails, try scrubbing gently with baking soda or vinegar – both are mild abrasives that will not scratch your cookware!
Use bar keepers friend
Bar Keepers Friend is a safe and effective cleaner for these types of items. It is an abrasive powder that can remove food from any kitchenware and bring back the shine.
Take some on your fingers, then rub it all over your cookware and rinse after a minute or two with warm water. Soon you’ll have happily cooking away once again in your brightly lit home.
Make sure to scrub the stain well with the Bar Keepers Friend powder to ensure it doesn’t come back later on! Be sure not to use this cleaning agent if ovens are still plugged in or turned on; they get hot quickly!
Mr. clean magic eraser
It’s effortless to clean Pyrex glass cookware with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser! Put dishwasher liquid on the Glass and scrub, then rinse thoroughly. Or buy a jar of Dapple, and it will give your old Pyrex set new life after only one wash.
All you need is 4 tablespoons of vinegar in a quart of water, combined with 2 tablespoons each of baking soda, washing up liquid, and salt to create an all-purpose cleaning solution.
That will rejuvenate your kitchenware without any harm being done to the surface, especially if it’s from using too many detergents or chemicals.
Oven cleaner
First, you’ll have to remove the Pyrex piece from direct contact with the dirty oven. You can place it on a sheet of tinfoil on an oven rack that’s in the upper third of your preheated oven.
Then turn off the oven and let it cool before opening the door. Or you can use a dishwasher, if possible, without a detergent or rinsing agent.
To clean Pyrex cookware in a dishwasher, you will need to put 2 tablespoons of salt inside and run for six minutes with water at 170 degrees centigrade (or cooler).
For cleaning items not placed in a dishwasher, use a non-abrasive cleaner such as baking soda dissolved in mild soap and lukewarm water.
Vinegar
It is an eco-friendly way to take care of food residue from cleaning Pyrex Glassware! Soak a damp sponge in white vinegar and scrub the stains off.
Let it soak longer or pour vinegar throughout the glass piece and scrub with a powder brush if that does not work.
I love knowing that this bowl (for example) has been passed down for generations. It reminds me of how a family is connected through traditions, recipes, and heirlooms.
Things to keep in mind when cleaning pyrex glass pans and dishes
- Don’t use soap. The high pH of the soap can create a ‘soap spot’ on the surface that is hard to remove
- Use water with just enough dishwasher detergent (without any added bleach) to do the job
- Scrub with a sponge or scouring pad. Avoid scratches by using soft style sponges or pads and not metal ones, which will scratch it up more, getting the dirt out of tight places like between creases in handles and bottoms where food gets stuck
- If you see anything, run an old toothbrush over it, gently polishing away what needs to be removed without scratching anything back into place
- Rinse well under running water
Final Words
To get the best results, don’t use dish soap. It can leave a film on your cookware that is difficult to clean off and will, in turn, make it more likely for food items to stick.
The next time you’re washing up any Pyrex dishes, try this easy trick – fill the sink with warm water and pour some baking soda into the mix before adding dirty Pyrex pieces. Let them soak for about 20 minutes, then wash as usual!
